Mr Benny

I have booked Benny in to get neutered next Thursday.  He will be six months old then and that is the age that they suggest dogs are "done".

As hard as I try I cannot help but project my human feelings about it all on to the whole thing.  I feel sorry for him.  Getting your nuts cut off is just not a good thing is it?  However, for all sorts of rational reasons dogs just have to be done.

Initially I agonised as to whether or not to wait until he was twelve months old.  Sometime this is recommended to allow a full cycle of testosterone to go through the dog.  That may well be a crock of shit but it is a theory out there.

However, we took him to the dog beach the other day and he just trying to hump every dog he met.  A few people asked me if he was "done" yet and then told me that all that would stop when he was.

At work I asked four of the guys if I was doing the right thing.  They were sitting around and having an after work drink.

There was a silence and then once said to me "Linda, you are asking four men that question?".

Their responses were predictable and of no help whatsoever.

Irrespective of my feelings about it all Benny will be fixed because it is the responsible thing to do when you are a pet owner.

I just hope he does not bark in a high voice afterwards.

Ciao
Linda

  1. A dog does not have the same attachment to the family jewels that men do. He won't really even notice they are missing, and he won't act any different. He will love you no matter what you do to him.

  2. As we've discussed before, dogs are NOT people, so getting him fixed SOON is the right thing to do.

I felt the same hesitation you do, many years ago when I didn't want to have my cat fixed. He started spraying everywhere, then got into fights. I thought I was being "humane", but it turned out that I was being unfair to the animal by not getting him fixed as soon as he should have been.

So I encourage & support you in your decision to get Benny taken care of quickly.

  3. I have the same debate with myself every time I have an animal spayed or neutered. I justify it by reminding myself of all the animals in pounds and shelters who need homes.

  4. Bruce is right. Dogs don't care if they have balls or not. And, that surgery is fairly simple (at least here in the States it is). They just cut the sac open a bit and pop them out. He'll be a bit sore but not as bad as what the 'girls' have to go through. You are doing the right thing for him!! Give Benny lots of hugs after he's done and he'll forgive you. :-)

  5. You have all convinced me that I am doing the right thing. Besides, I took him to the dog beach again today and he was so badly behaved with his "humping" any and every dog. Plus, plenty of dogs in the world as it is.
