I'd like to say that I was very productive and achieved a lot. However, I have to confess that it did not go that way.
After S went to school and K went to work I decided to do a bit of reading. Nothing wrong with reading but I am inclined to feel guilty as can be when I do read. As though I should be doing something more useful. But last night I had started a book and thought it enjoyable so decided to sit at the table with a cup of tea and read.
The book of choice was called "With my Body" by Nikki Gemmell. It started off okay but then was just a lot of the same. I flicked through it and then ended up reading the last chapter and thought "ho hum".
Just before lunch the person who did the Tupperware party at my house the other week dropped off all the items that had been ordered. She stayed for about an hour and then I was left to my own devices which, as you can imagine, involved sorting out the pantry. You would not think that a person could spend almost three hours fucking around with plastic containers but I managed to.
I had to wash and dry them all which in itself was utterly boring. At the same time I was baking a banana cake. To entertain myself I also downloaded a movie from Apple iTV. The movie was Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy which was based on the novel of the same name by John le Carre. The settings were fantastic. Tension was there. Characters were good. John Hurt was in it. He would be one of my favourite actors. I adore all his movies that I have seen.
The movie was so enjoyable that I am going to watch it again.
I ended up with a neat and tidy pantry. I like opening the cupboard and looking at it. It makes me feel weirdly happy looking at it. Unfortunately, each time I open the pantry door I eat something. So I might take a photo of it instead and just look at it.
So essentially I spent my day in one room. I did do laundry and tidy but after that load of plastic arrived I was trapped in the kitchen space. But I can do that when I have four days off.
Now I did say that I would look up some riveting information from a medical book I have and here it is.
This book is called "The Illustrated Family Doctor" and is dated 1935.
Housemaid's Knee - Bursitis Knee. Inflammation of a bursa (small pocket found in the smooth lining of joints). Occurs in the knee frequently as the housemaid is often on her knees scrubbing the floors. Also found in the elbows of miners and other who lean on their elbows at work. A mat for the housemaid to kneel on will help alleviate the problem.
That is not word for word copy of what was written. One thing I know, the chances of me ever getting housemaid's knee are very, very minuscule.
Next post I will touch on the condition of Caisson disease. Or Devonshire Colic. The book is full of all sorts of conditions that are no longer around.
I could Google things but there is something pleasurable about reading an old book. Makes me wonder who else read it. Did they have it on their shelf in the kitchen? Refer to it when someone was ill?
Was it the Google of the 1930's?
The other day my son asked me how did we find out about things before the Internet. I said that we went to the library or read books.
Life before the Internet.
Seems so long ago now.

Where would we all be without Al Gore?
ReplyDeleteMarianne: Exactly where you are right now since he is not in power.
ReplyDeleteIt's quite impressive.
