Thursday 17th May

I got my coffee machine the other day.

Fiddled around with it.  Followed all the instructions to get it working.

Made three coffees to try it out and they were delicious.  However, I was awake quite a lot during the night because of the caffeine.

I went to sleep okay but then at 1.00 am I woke up and was a bright as a button.  Benny was making a noise so I got out of bed to let him out for a pee.  Then he ran back inside and into the bedroom and woke K up.  I tried to call out for him quietly but to no avail.  I had to run after him and then get him back into his pen and he went to sleep.

However, I remained awake for about two hours.  Then when I had to get out of bed the to go to work I felt so tired.

I really need to get to bed early if I am to function well the next day.  Today was a perfect example of the consequences of a late night.

Last night I stayed up to watch back to back episodes of Embarrassing Bodies.  It is a British show where doctors drive around to different towns and tackle all sorts of health problems with the locals.  It is compelling viewing in a voyeuristic kind of way.

Anyway, it finished late and I was not in bed until midnight.  Took a while to get to sleep and then woke up early.  I felt very tired.

When I finally got to work I was still dragging my feet and decided to eat a banana for some energy.  Also had a coffee.  And then I made the fatal mistake of having a slice of chocolate mud cake that was in the fridge.  Just a thin slice.

After the coffee, banana and chocolate cake I felt tired and fat.  Lunch time rocked around and I just had toast and a bowl of fruit salad.

Then more cake.

Then a bit more.

And one more bit.

All thinly sliced of course.

Now it is the evening and I am still as tired as ever and picking at some chocolate things.

Waiting for some energy.

But I think what I really need to get some energy is to go to bed early and get a good sleep.

So I may just do that.

Ciao

  1. I'm surprised that America hasn't done a show like "Embarrassing Bodies" -- at least, that I know of.

There have been many times when I've been embarrassed to witness how FAT America has become!

If they did a TV series like that here, there would be enough material for around-the-clock episodes, every day of the week. It's sad, really.

But hopefully things are changing; it seems that more people are becoming health-conscious lately. This may be wishful thinking on my part, though.

  2. Cameron: I am not sure the show would be allowed in the US on normal tv. The cameras go everywhere - nothing is spared.

They had a series that targeted obesity and it was very confronting. Honestly, I really, really don't know how a person gets so big. They were bed bound. Someone is feeding them. It is more like an addiction - and there are people who encourage the feeding of them.

When I see a very overweight teenager I feel they are going to find life very difficult. My sister's two boys are obese. She comes up with a lot of reasons why but the reality is that they eat too much. I have seen their portion sizes.

I could go on and on about it. I hope it turns around and people start to take control of their eating habits.

  3. I can only have one cup of coffee in the morning when I wake up, or I have the exact sort of day you just described. Your body is craving energy and most likely your endorphin levels were down which is why you wanted sweets. It's a poor substitute for real energy and serotonin, but your body craves it nonetheless. I eat much more healthily when I've gotten a good night's sleep. Here's to tonight for you! although right now you're most likely at work. So I should say I hope you slept well last night. TGIF!!

  4. Karen: I did a second late night and Friday was a bit poor but am back on track and the fatty food craving has settled down to normal.

No wonder people who do night shift have problems with their weight. They must be hungry all the time.
