Rated M

Today my son went with his three friends to the movies.

I organised the tickets for them online.

The movie was The Dictator.

About an hour after my son was dropped off he called K to get picked up again.

Reason?  The boys were not allowed to see the movie because they were under 15.

I found that very bizarre.

That the government sees fit to impose age restrictions on movies is all well and good.  But isn't it kind of contradictory considering the total lack of monitoring as to what is freely available on the Internet?  Or even what is on television?

Once, many years ago, the morning news was on television and they showed (without warning) bodies hanging from trees.  It was footage from what was happening in Yugoslavia.  My son was three at the time and was actually upset by it.  He said to me "I saw something bad".

I was really annoyed.

Where was rating at that time of the day?

  1. You are exactly right. My daughter is not allowed into certain movies without me present. I find it incredibly hypocritical, given what is freely shown on the news and on TV. Violence is everywhere, especially in the video games and on the internet. Here in the US, the kids simply go to a large multiplex theater, get the tickets for one movie, and sneak into the one they want to see, and no one even checks on them. So it's monitored at the register, but not in the theaters themselves. Pretty stupid, if you ask me. kids will get around pretty much every rule, they've been doing it for centuries.

  2. Karen: My son did think of doing just that (getting tickets to another movie and sneaking into the one they wanted) but it was all too hard.

What really annoyed him is that he did not look older than fifteen. He often thinks he looks older - sadly, it appears he really doesn't.
