I have tomorrow off work.
There is something so nice about having a work day off when everyone else is working. Sort of like wagging school.
Sadly, as an adult one can't just wag it and keep it a secret. If I wagged school nobody knew but the person I wagged school with. And we got up to mildly naughty things like having a ciggy somewhere and a drink of Lilydale Apple Cider which was the cheapest booze around. Sickly sweet taste with a great alcoholic punch for a teenager.
However, tomorrow I have grown up things to do. I take days off to get things done that need doing on a week day. And dull things they generally are. The bright spot of the day is that I will be catching up with my favourite niece.
The work around the house has been ticking over and this Saturday the joinery is going in but the bench tops will be at least three weeks before they arrive. Because the stove is not coming until around February I am having the old stove reconnected outside on the back verandah. This solution came about today when the plumber from work suggested it. So I can cook Christmas dinner on the stove outside and I don't have to buy a BBQ.
I know it seems like a bit of fun not having to cook because there is no stove to cook on, but it is pretty dreary trying to find really healthy food to eat that just needs heating up in the microwave. There are some great places I can get things but it tastes all the same after a while. Recently K bought a frozen dinner for himself and S from a place around the corner. They do things like roast dinners or very traditional desserts. My son ate one that was roast chicken and the next night K dished up one that consisted of meat pie and vegetables. S refused to eat it (meat pie being chunky meat and not minced meat). Later that night he said he felt weak with hunger. So we gave him a bowl of ice-cream for sustenance. I can see a bad habit developing here if the food situation is not under control.
Although, I wonder if I could puree vegetables into ice-cream. Would he notice beans and peas amongst the cookies and cream?
The other thing is that I miss baking. I like to bake a cake or biscuits. Look up the recipes. Try something new. Measure out the ingredients, mix them up and pop what ever it is in the oven. It's therapeutic and I miss that process.
Still, it is not forever and I am very happy to have the inconvenience because it is a means to an end.
Last night we went out to a local RSL club for dinner (RSL = Returned Services League) so that we could have something tasty and well cooked. It was so depressing there. They have pokie machines and you can hear them from the dining area. The ringing bell noises drifting over to where we sat. It was all but empty except for a few lone diners. The atmosphere was hollow. There is a culture of drinking and gambling that we are just not part of and seeing it at work in this sort of place makes me feel a bit flat.
I am not sure how people eat out all the time. It's all a bit time consuming and boring. Plus I think that home cooked food has a really nice flavour that you can never really get when you eat out. Even my crap cooking is nice.
I just realised that I have been plodding away at this post for ages.
That's because it is a Thursday post.

It would appear that your son misses your cooking!
That is a great idea to use the stove outside. That will be nice and convenient. And no BQ!
You are missing part of the home routine, but it is true there will be closure on the kitchen before you know it.
A dining experience must have an nice atmosphere to be enjoyable. It makes the food taste better I think.
Eating at home with your family has a warmth to it that you may not notice until you don't have it.
Enjoy your well deserved day off!
Oooh RSL sounds depressing, we have clubs like that here, I think they are called American Legion, where they seem to smoke and drink and gamble, never been inside one but lived across from one in Alaska and there were oldsters reeling out late at night from there a lot.
Hope you get kitchen facilities back soon!
RJ: I used the stove outside today to make pasta. It was rather funny. But the food was nice.
Day off was good. But I want more off.
Topiary: That does sound the same. Very depressing.
